PM-KUSUM Yojana (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan)
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) is a government initiative aimed at promoting solar energy in the agricultural sector. This scheme helps farmers adopt renewable energy for irrigation and farming needs, reducing their dependence on conventional power sources and diesel.
Benefits of PM-KUSUM Yojana
Subsidized Solar Pumps:
Farmers can install solar-powered pumps at highly subsidized rates.
Energy Independence:
Farmers can generate electricity for their irrigation needs.
Income from Surplus Power:
Farmers can sell excess power to the grid and earn additional income.
Cost Savings:
Reduced dependence on diesel-powered pumps lowers operational costs.
Environmental Benefits:
Promotes the use of clean and renewable energy.
Components of PM-KUSUM Yojana
The scheme has three major components:
- Component A:
- Installation of 10,000 MW of decentralized grid-connected renewable energy power plants (up to 2 MW capacity each) on barren or unused lands.
- Farmers, co-operatives, and panchayats can lease their land for solar power plants and earn revenue.
- To install 10,000 MW of decentralized, grid-connected renewable energy power plants on barren or unused agricultural lands.
Key Features:
- Solar power plants with capacities up to 2 MW each can be set up by farmers, cooperatives, panchayats, and farmer producer organizations (FPOs).
- The electricity generated is sold to power distribution companies (DISCOMs) at pre-fixed tariffs.
- Farmers can lease their land for solar power plants and earn a stable income.
Benefits:
- Utilizes barren land for productive purposes.
- Generates additional income for farmers.
- Contributes to the renewable energy goals of the country.
- Component B:
- Installation of standalone solar-powered agriculture pumps.
- Targets replacing diesel pumps with solar ones, reducing fuel costs and emissions.
- To replace diesel-powered irrigation pumps with standalone solar pumps, with a target of 17.5 lakh solar pumps.
Key Features:
- Solar pumps are installed in areas where grid power is unavailable or unreliable.
- Farmers get subsidies to reduce the cost of solar pump installations.
- Promotes energy independence for farmers by eliminating the need for diesel or grid electricity.
Benefits:
- Reduces operational costs for farmers by replacing diesel with free solar energy.
- Lowers greenhouse gas emissions.
- Improves irrigation access in remote areas.
- Component C: Feeder Level Solarisation (FLS)
- Instead of the individual solar pumps the states can solarize the agriculture feeders. Guidelines were issued on 04.12.2020.
- Where agriculture feeders are not separated, loan for feeder separation may be taken from NABARD or PFC/REC. Further, assistance for feeder separation may be availed from the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) of the Ministry of Power. However, mixed can also be solarised.
- Solar plants of capacity that can cater to the requirement of the agriculture load of the selected feeder can be installed through CAPEX/RESCO mode for a project period of 25 years.
- CFA of 30% on the cost of installation of solar power plant (up to Rs. 1.05 Cr/MW) will be provided. However, in the North Eastern States, Sikkim, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Lakshadweep, and A&N Islands 50% subsidy is available.
- The farmers will get day-time reliable power for irrigation free of cost or at tariff fixed by their respective state.
Key Features:
- Farmers can install solar panels to power their existing pumps.
- Surplus electricity generated can be sold back to the grid under net metering policies, providing additional income.
- Promotes efficient energy usage by utilizing solar power during the day.
Benefits:
- Reduces grid electricity consumption, benefiting both farmers and DISCOMs.
- Encourages farmers to adopt renewable energy practices.
- Provides a reliable energy source for irrigation needs.
Total Targets Under PM-KUSUM Yojana
- Component A: 10,000 MW of decentralized solar power plants.
- Component B: 17.5 lakh standalone solar pumps.
- Component C: 1 mega wat to 10 mega wat

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana
The Surya Ghar Yojana is a state or central government initiative aimed at promoting the adoption of solar rooftop systems in residential homes. This scheme empowers households to generate their own electricity using solar energy, leading to reduced energy bills and contributing to a greener environment.
Benefits of PM- Surya Ghar Yojana
Subsidized Solar Installations:
Homeowners receive financial assistance to cover up to 40% of the cost for systems up to 3 kW.
Energy Independence:
Generate your own electricity and reduce reliance on grid power.
Net Metering:
Export surplus energy to the grid and earn credits for it.
Long-Term Savings:
Significant reduction in electricity bills over the system’s 25+ year lifespan.
Environmental Impact:
Contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by using clean energy.
Eligibility for Surya Ghar Yojana
- Residential homeowners with rooftops suitable for solar installation.
- Applicants must connect the system to the local electricity grid for net metering.
- Systems must comply with the technical standards set by the government.
How to Apply for Surya Ghar Yojana
- Check Eligibility: Ensure your home meets the criteria for rooftop solar installation.
- Contact an Approved Vendor: Select a vendor certified by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
- Submit Documents: Provide necessary documents such as ID proof, property ownership proof, and electricity bills.
